Getting Started in Amateur Radio

Amateur radio is a technical hobby that lets you make friends using radio communication. The hobby dates back over 100 years, and today’s radio amateurs use cutting-edge technology to communicate around the corner, and around the world.

With amateur radio, you can take part in field events, go “mobile”, use handheld or mobile radios to keep in contact, and even try your luck at talking to astronauts on the International Space Station. You’ll also become a part of the amateur radio community, helping to share ideas and meet new people.

Getting started in amateur radio couldn’t be easier – At SEARS, we offer the entry-level Foundation course, which teaches you all you need to know to get started.

Topics covered include:

An addition, there are a number of short practical exercises, which will help to make sure you can connect your equipment together safely, send your first message over the radio, and have a go at sending  a couple of words in Morse code. At the end of the short course, you’ll sit a multiple choice test, and once you’ve passed, you’ll receive your licence and your first amateur radio callsign. From there, you’re encouraged to get on the air and talk to the world.

The friendly team at SEARS have years of radio experience, and the course tutors will guide you all the way at the conveniently-located training centre in Thundersley.
