Mills on the Air 14th May 2017
The day started inauspiciously enough. As we were erecting the gazebo it was raining - then the ‘pop-up’ didn’t ‘pop-up’ causing part of the roof structure to buckle - wonderful. But being resourceful folks we soon had it sorted and then the sun came out - what a lovely day it turned out to be.
The radio side of things was pretty good too. We made 27 contact on HF, most on CW, with Japan again in the log. But the big surprise of the day was 2 mtrs - 62 separate stations recorded. In fact the operators were enjoying themselves so much that we couldn’t get them off air and ended up dismantling the gazebo around them. I think it is the first ever field event where the natterers on VHF have outperformed Dave on his morse key.
The Mill was open for International Mills Weekend (with staff in costume) and quite a few of the mill visitors showed an interest in our station. We managed to get at least one to have a go under Pete’s (M0PSX) expert supervision.
As always tea, coffee and bacon butties were on the menu and all in all we had a very enjoyable day.
